Mission 10:

The Black Parade

A solid, though perhaps a bit strange end to a fantastic campaign. I really wish there was more to do in this mission, because as it stands, there is little reason to fully explore the dark sanctuary that this mission presents. It is masterfully designed, but leaves more to be desired in the gameplay department. The new enemies and the atmosphere of this dark world are both brilliant, but underused gameplay elements hampers the mission to an almost unfair degree. This is the only time in the campaign where I feel the design team missed out on a great opportunity, something that could’ve been fixed by a few, relatively minor, changes.

To begin with, I had to use the three acquired items on the statuette, in an attempt to sever the brand. Not before long, however, additional instructions to find Azaran and thwart his plans would appear.

The only problem in this mission was circumventing the three particle walls that required the strange key to unlock. The first one was easy, as there was a seemingly intended way of climbing a big rock formation on the northeastern part of the second level’s balcony walkway. The next was trickier, as it required a rope arrow up a chute at the southern end of level 3 (left image below). There was a stationary necromancer just below this point and he often heard me rummage around. The room I emerged in on level 4 was furthermore very bright, so I had to wait out any patrollers.

The last issue was also the biggest, namely in Azaran’s ritual chamber on the roof. Every entry was blocked by particle walls. Taking the strange key would require me to return it, while still closing the doors, which I don’t think is even possible. Luckily, there was a way to climb the red plateaus on the north side of the chamber and end up on the roof of the entire structure (right image above). From here, I could drop onto one of the bloody veins without taking damage. Azaran didn’t give first alerts, which was a big help. I could steal his purse, place the necrotic ingredients, and wait in the shade until the mission ended.

A big thanks to Feuillade Industries for this magnificent campaign!
